Wrath of Rakshasa - Six Flags Great America

Six Flags Great America – Finishing What We Started Yesterday

After such an awesome day at Six Flags Great America (SFGAm) with Steven and Rocco from Thrill Maxx, Jen and I would fend for ourselves during our second day at the park. Sadly, they would not be joining us again, but thankfully they showed us all around the park on and left us with some sound tips on Day 1.

Our plan was to go without Flash Passes for this visit after buying them for Day 1. They were quite expensive. But upon entering the park, Jen decided to treat us to another round of skipping the lines. It looked to be another crowded day. They would help out since I wanted to do a lap around the park with my camera and take a bunch of photos.

All the photos I took on Day 1 were done with my phone to maximize our time with Steven and Rocco. Now that I knew the park’s layout I’d also have an easier time getting the shots I wanted. And boy did I ever come away with some awesome shots! Be sure to check out the gallery at this report’s conclusion.

Little Dipper - Six Flags Great America
Jen and I focused on getting the coasters we missed on Day 1, like Little Dipper, upon entering the park.

This Time, On Our Own

On Day 1 Jen and I managed to ride all of the coasters except for Superman Ultimate Flight, Little Dipper, and Sprocket Rockets. Wanting to make sure we completed the park’s coaster credits, we went to them immediately following my photo lap. I was most excited for Little Dipper because of its history. It was also nice to ride the last of the three Superman Ultimate Flight clones having done the ones at Six Flags Great Adventure (SFGAdv) and Six Flags Over Georgia (SFOG).

After finishing up with those, we made sure to get in re-rides on our favorites like Raging Bull, Goliath, and Maxx Force. Talk about three great coasters. But what makes this park so great is the rest of the line up also had us wanting to get in at least one more ride on each. More American Eagle? Yes please. Viper? Hell yeah! X-Flight? Sure thing. Demon? Wouldn’t miss it. Whizzer? Why not? You get my point. All that and I forgot to mention Batman the Ride. I love those clones. Anyhow, moving on.

Having covered Raging Bull, Goliath, and American Eagle in Day 1’s trip report, I wanted to focus on three different coasters this time around. Some of what I have to say here will be based on our experiences from both days though since I didn’t mention them yesterday.

Wrath of Rakshasa

When we bought our Flash Passes on Day 1, Steven and Rocco were under the assumption that Wrath of Rakshasa was part of the rides available to skip. It made sense with its recent opening. When we finally made our way over to the ride, however, I noticed the Flash Pass line was open. I said something to Steven. He had all of our Flash passes on his phone, so he went in to double check. To his surprise, it was on there as a one time skip. It never had been offered in his previous visits, so it was great news. And thankfully so too. The line was easily the longest one in the park.

Knowing we’d be visiting this park shortly after the ride opened had me excited. I do enjoy B&M Dive Coasters. Griffon at Busch Gardens Williamsburg (BGW) and Sheikra at Busch Gardens Tampa (BGT) are my favorites. Valravn at Cedar Point is good, but I wish it didn’t have the vest restraints. And then there is Iron Menace at Dorney Park. Yeah, that one I don’t care for much with its super short length and rattle. I crossed my fingers that Wrath would not have that same rattle.

So did it? Yeah, kinda. With only two skips over the two visits, we only rode Wrath twice. My ride on Day 1 came in a middle seat, so I didn’t notice it too much. On Day 2, however, I was sitting out on an end seat. And yeah, it was quite noticeable.

I do love the change up of elements on this Dive Coaster, however. I think it’s the ride’s strongest aspect. It doesn’t feel like the ones I’ve ridden at all. It gives it a nice change of pace. It also looks great over the midway and I think Six Flags did a good job with its theming and paint scheme.

My only concern for this ride will be how it fairs after a few years of operation. With that rattle quite prevalent shortly after opening, what will it be like in a few years? With Sam wanting to visit this park sometime soon, hopefully I’ll get to find out sooner rather than later.

Maxx Force

I’m going to be honest here. While I was intrigued by Maxx Force’s reputation for having such a punchy launch, I fully expected this ride to be a one-trick pony. Sure. That launch is cool, but what else do you do? This was always why I’ve never ranked Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point or Kingda Ka at SFGAdv especially high among my favorite coasters. Although it’s also short, I’ve always prefered Hersheypark’s Storm Runner to them because it does more after that launch. So maybe Maxx Force would be the same?

Oh hell yeah it was!

That reputation for the launch was well-earned. Of my four rides, three of them came in the front row with the last being in the back. Front row is where it’s at here. The wind in your face and unobstructed view is worth it. And just like on Storm Runner, flying through the quick-fire elements following the launch with nothing in front of you is wild. Yes, it’s over quickly, but you feel every bit of this ride.

Viper

In Day 1’s trip report I made sure I talked about American Eagle. Here I want to talk about another awesome woodie in the park – Viper. I heard how good and even how underrated this coaster was leading up to our trip. While it wasn’t the first coaster I planned to run to at the park opening, I most certainly wanted to get in a couple rides on this to find out if all the talk was warranted.

Spoiler: It is.

This coaster ran quite smooth and the airtime and lateral moments hit harder than I expected. I also think this coaster is a great sister woodie to American Eagle with them giving vastly different rides. You have a lot more moments of quick laterals on Viper as opposed to the longer, drawn out ones on Eagle. Viper’s airtime is more intense whereas Eagle’s is more floaty and longer lasting. This is definitely the more feisty of the two, if that makes sense. Don’t miss out on this ride if you visit. It’s totally worth experiencing.

Batman the Ride - Six Flags Great America
For years I have been wanting to ride the original Batman the Ride, especially since I love inverted coasters.

The Best Six Flags Park I've Ever Visited

After spending two days in a row at SFGAm I think I can say that it is now my favorite of the original Six Flags properties. I always considered SFGAdv to be my favorite of the ones I’ve visited, but with it’s recent operations, ride removals, and stagnant feel, SFGAm wowed me big time and easily moved past it as my favorite.

I truly cannot wait to return to this park. It’s on Sam’s bucket list so I know I’ll be back here again before long. I’m thinking that we pair it up with a stop at Indiana Beach when we return. It’s been a few years now since I’ve been. We’re talking pre-Gene Staples ownership. Hopefully Steven and Rocco will be able to come out when that happens. I wish they could have been with us here on Day 2, but I’m thankful to them for coming out and spending time with us on Day 1.

Had our trip ended here, I’d go home happy. But we are only three days in at this point with a lot left to do. Check back soon for what’s to come from the remainder of this awesome trip.
