Back in April Sam and I visited Six Flags Great Adventure (SFGAdv) to get some rides in on El Toro. Now, only a few months later I was returning, but this time with Jen and a bunch of my coworkers. Every year I plan out an amusement park trip in mid to late June. We go to parks throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. And this year people wanted to go to SFGAdv. So that meant I was headed back. That was fine by me though as Jen had never visited this park and I’ve been wanting to get her there for some time. Too bad I didn’t get her up there before they scrapped Kingda Ka.
No Park Completion Today
As much as I had hoped that I could have run Jen and my friends all throughout the park, getting in every coaster, that wasn’t going to happen. First of all, Batman the Ride has been down all season. And even worse, the forecast was calling for storms to pass through the region around 6 p.m. Hopefully we could get in a bunch of rides before then.
Spoiler: We didn’t. As a matter of fact, the storms came early and we didn’t get in much of anything. We did four coasters, the log flume, and Houdini’s Great Escape. We were about to board Jersey Devil Coaster when the staff was told to clear the trains and shut everything down. We sought out cover in the nearby Skull Mountain.
Once the rain slowed down, we emerged and heard the loud speaker saying the park was closing at 4 p.m. I was surprised as the sun was peaking back out and the rain looked to be ending. More storms were on the horizon, however, so I guess they just decided to call it.
Here are some of the highlights from our short visit:
El Toro
We made our way over to El Toro first. I wanted to beat any lines, especially since the coaster is still running one train for some reason. It was also doing that back in April too. We didn’t even see the second train parked. That was still the case this visit. I wonder what the hold up is?
Anyhow, the ride wasn’t open when we made it over, but it did eventually open after we rode Medusa and the Saw Mill Log Ride. I will say, it ran fast and the airtime was great. Now that I’ve been out there riding so many new coasters across the United States, however, I find this one slowly sinking in my rankings. It’s still a hell of a ride, but I find myself liking others more.
Medusa
I was excited to get back on Medusa after recently riding the Medusa at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom (SFDK) earlier this month. It did reaffirm my feelings that the one at SFDK is a better ride, but this one has a much better placement even though it’s in a bare field. It just beats seeing parking spaces below. I also really prefer the paint scheme on the one at SFDK to this new orange and green one. Anyone else feel the same way?
Flash Vertical Velocity
Although we had a little bit of a wait for this one, it was well worth it. I actually got in a front row ride with Jen and the audio was working. That hasn’t been the case for every ride I’ve done on this Vekoma Super Boomerang.
Jen really enjoyed this ride and this was probably my favorite ride I’ve done on it too. It tracks so smoothly. It just sucks being at a bigger park like SFGAdv. As much as I like it, it’s not worth waiting in a long line for.

Coming Back for the Rest Following Six Flags New England
While we did get to walk through some of the Shoreline Pier, only a couple of rides were running. Others are still being worked on and look to be on the precipice of opening. This did allow for me to take some wide open shots of Barrels O’ Fun, though. I love its new paint scheme and will surely be back to grab this credit once it opens.
With an upcoming trip to the New England region to visit Quassy, Lake Compounce, and Six Flags New England (SFNE) in a couple of weeks, we might stop at SFGAdv on the way home yet again. Maybe Barrels will be open by then and the credits that Jen missed will be open. I’m sure Sam will want to get in another ride or two on El Toro as well. Check back soon to see how that stop turned out.
