Rapterra - Kings Dominion

Kings Dominion – First Rides on Rapterra

It always this time of year the itch to ride roller coasters really begins to kick in. It’s April and most of the parks around here haven been closed for months, or have very limited offerings due to the cold weather. To say I’m usually going through coaster withdraw at this point of the year is a vast understatement. I’m sure Sam would agree. That is why we decided to take some time off and head down to both Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens Williamsburg (BGW) for a short, two-day excursion.

First up would be Kings Dominion, which we were really looking forward to with Rapterra’s recent opening. I’ve had my eye on this coaster since the track began showing up out in the parking lot. Now we’d get to see it fully realized and just how nicely it would fit into the new Jungle X-pedition area.

We made our way to Rapterra first thing after entering the park.

10 Total Rides in a Short Period of Time

With it being April the hours were limited. Still, we were going to ride as much as we could in the timeframe we had. We lucked out with some short lines, but one train operations on one our favorites set us back over an hour. A few ride closures also meant we wouldn’t have as much to ride. Oh, and of course Anaconda was removed. Sure, most people are happy about this, but I am not one of them. I have loved that ride since it’s debut. It was my favorite ride as a kid back when it debuted. I was honestly sad to see its demise.

Rapterra

We made our way to Rapterra first thing. If anything, we wanted to make sure we secured our first new credit of the year. I was eager to see how it rode and had been hearing great things about the back left seat. Was it as good as people claimed? Hell yeah!

When it comes to B&M Wing coasters I have experienced most of them in the United States with GateKeeper, Wild Eagle, and Thunderbird. One day I hope to add X-Flight to that list, but Rapterra would come first.

One thing I do love about these coasters are the near miss elements. I like those in general regardless. With Rapterra, however, this wing coaster features none. I thought the columns during the launch would be the near miss elements, but they don’t feel close enough to suffice. Even without those near misses, this coaster does deliver in other ways that surprised me.

First off all, that tilted hill after the launch is wild, especially if you sit in that back left row. You get pulled through the element going up and right when you’re at the floaty peak, you get yanked down by the train dropping back down in front of you. That row is a must for any coaster enthusiast.

I also enjoyed the slow inverting moments that provide some hangtime. As much as I enjoy airtime, I’ve come to treasure coasters with hangtime in recent years. It seems like more coaster manufacturers are including this in their rides too. Rides like Pantheon, Copperhead Strike, Jersey Devil, and Wildcat’s Revenge all have hangtime that I love. I hope to see even more of it moving forward.

As for the reported rattle, I will say I noticed it only slightly on our first two rides of the day. When we came back for a third ride later on, it was more pronounced. I’m not sure if it was just the row we were in, or if it was because the train had warmed up. I won’t say it’s bad, but it is noticeable. I’ll need more rides to have a better feel, though.

Twisted Timbers

This is my favorite ride in the park. It’s right up there with i305, ahem, Pantherian for Sam. We were hoping to get in a few laps on this badass RMC, but in order to do that, we would have been standing in line for hours. It took us over an hour to ride Twisted Timbers the first time with its one train operations. And if I’m being perfectly honest, fast operations on Twisted Timbers have never been a thing even with two trains. We decided we’d try to come back later for a second ride to see if the line was shorter.

That wasn’t the case though. The line was just as long as it was earlier. We settled for our one ride and went to Dominator and then got in a third ride on Rapterra instead.

Grizzly

Grizzly was another ride I was looking forward to after having more re-track work done in the off-season. What was re-tracked in 2023 into 2024 made this ride so much better, but hearing that they were going to go in and do even more work had me intrigued.

After riding Grizzly here in 2025 I can honestly say that this ride is so much better than it was just a few years ago. I’m so glad Kings Dominion put in the money and work needed to make this ride respectable and one worth riding multiple times. Sadly we didn’t get to do that with the park’s limited hours. I know I’ll be back in a few months though and plan on riding it again. What I really want, however, is some night rides on this bad boy. I’m sure it’ll be even better back there riding in the dark. Night rides are the best!

Flight of Fear was closed early in the day, but when it opened the wait times were too long for our liking.

More Updates to Rides to Fit the Jungle X-Pedition Theme

Overall I was quite happy with my first park visit of 2025. I love what Kings Dominion is doing with putting in work to restore and upkeep their rides. Grizzly is a shining example of this, along with all of the updates and work going into the Jungle X-Pedition area. Pantherian looks to be coming along and I can’t wait to see it with paint that isn’t chipped, faded, and ugly. I always hated that red and yellow McDonald’s paint scheme. I never understood that choice.

With all that being said, I should be returning at least one more time to Kings Dominion in 2025 with some of my co-workers. They saw photos of Rapterra and thought it looked wild. For most of them, they’ve never been on a wing coaster other than a 4D Free Spin or Skyrush. They’re excited and want to give it a try. I know I can’t wait to return.
