Back in January of 2014 I made my first and until now, only visit to Busch Gardens Tampa (BGT). James was in Florida with this then girlfriend while she attended a work conference. He asked me if I wanted to come down and go to BGT with him. He knew he’d be sitting in the hotel room with nothing to do for a few days while she was busy with seminars. I said sure because I always wanted to go to BGT and back then, James and I were hitting up a bunch of parks whenever we could.
James picked me up from the Tampa airport the morning I landed and we went straight to the park. Although it was January, we were in Florida so it wasn’t cold – just cool. Not cold enough to shut down rides. Long story short though, rides were indeed closed and one was sitting, but not operating (SBNO). So the experience wasn’t exactly a great one, especially since I didn’t get to ride the coaster I was most looking forward to in Montu.
During that 2014 visit I ultimately ended up missing out on Montu, Scorpion, and Falcon’s Fury since they were all closed. Montu was closed because they were power washing it due to the construction of the nearby Cobra’s Curse. It looked like we might miss out on Sand Serpent too, but it eventually opened up after a few hours into the day. Gwazi (not Iron Gwazi yet) was also there staring at me, but was SBNO by 2014. So as you can see, I really needed a new visit to this park so I could ride coasters and not just look at them.
So Much to be Annoyed By
So did this visit fair any better? Not really when you take everything into account. Cheetah Hunt, Kumba (testing after extended downtime), and Falcon’s Fury (again) were all closed. Stanley Falls had recently closed for good too, but we still got to look at it like I did with Gwazi in 2014.
Now I have the Kumba and Cheetah Hunt credits, but this time around Sam would have coasters she would ultimately miss out on. I mean, I was bummed too since I like both coasters and would have loved to ride them again.
Then there was the way the park handles Howl-O-Scream (HOS). We’re used to the way Busch Gardens Williamsburg (BGW) handles theirs. You buy a ticket during HOS days and you get access to the park all day and the haunt. Not with BGT. You have to either leave the park and come back in, or get a wristband to show that you can stay in the park. For those that do, the park closes for an hour with nothing to do, so you just stand around feeling like an idiot. Furthermore, once the HOS starts, there is no leaving the park and returning. Once you’re out, you’re out. Cool, got it.
What they don’t tell you is once you toss that wristband on, you can’t leave and return either. Yes, even though HOS doesn’t start for almost two hours, once that band goes on, you have to stay in the park.
Had I known that, I would have taken out our merch and my camera real quick, came back in, then got the wristband since it was well before the time where you couldn’t re-enter. And no, they wouldn’t issue me a new one either. I asked.
Then there was the HOS Fast Pass. We bought the package that let us skip each haunt once and then 10 rides. On the site it just said “10 rides.” When issued the pass, it came with a list of rides that you could skip once each. That would make sense, but it wasn’t advertised that way. Furthermore, numerous rides on the pass weren’t even open that day which included the aformentioned Cheetah Hunt, Falcon’s Fury, and Kumba.
We decided to go to guest services and ask what we were supposed to do about the closed rides. Their answer was that we could come back another day and use them. When we informed them we were traveling and only at the park one day, a supervisor came over. She told us we could just tell the ride ops that for the closed ones we could skip another ride instead. Great! But I bet the ride ops didn’t know that. And they didn’t.
And speaking of ride ops! Oh boy… I never saw so many people have phones out during restraint checks and dispatches. The ops didn’t tell people to put them away, or take them from the riders to put into bins. They just let them go. The worst crew was easily on Iron Gwazi followed up by the one at Cobra’s Curse. Our train literally went by three ops standing on the platform watching the large group in front of us have multiple phones out and taking selfies, which continued onto the elevator lift. Nothing was said and we weren’t stopped.
Okay, enough bitching. I don’t want this to be a trip report just bashing the park, but those things needed to be said. Now onto the ride highlights from our long day.
Montu
Vindication! This coaster had eluded me for way too long. Alpengeist at BGW has long been my favorite inverted coaster, but hearing so many people say how Montu is their favorite had me wanting to ride this so bad for so many years. And now I finally have.
So does Montu surpass Alpengeist? No. I still lean toward Alpie. Montu is amazing though, don’t get me wrong. I just have so many more rides on Alpie and have made so many amazing memories riding it with friends and family. I can’t ignore that.
While I’m also a sucker for Egyptian history and architecture, that still wasn’t enough to put it over my fav. But man, do I like this coaster’s setting and all the trenches it dives into too. Montu is also full of intense moments, just like Alpie. B&M just doesn’t make them like they did in this era anymore.
Whether you lean toward Alpengeist or Montu, I can’t say I blame you. These rides currently sit number 16 and 17 on my Complete Favorites Ranking as of this writing. I could ride both of them all day.
Iron Gwazi
Along with Stardust Racers at Epic Universe and Velocicoaster at Islands of Adventure, Iron Gwazi was in the trifecta of coasters I was most looking forward to this trip. With us missing Stardust Racers the day before, Iron Gwazi was up to bat and I was praying that it gave Steel Vengeance at Cedar Point a run for its money.
Since the park was only running one train we knew we wouldn’t get in as many rides as we hoped. Plus the operations on this ride might be the slowest of any RMC I’ve seen. We only got three rides with an average of 35-45 minute station waits.
To be honest, our first ride was rather lame. It came in the front seat so I could film my POV. It didn’t impress me at all. I got off the ride saying, “What is all the hype about?” Sam agreed.
We waited until later in the day to return. These rides we we’d go for the back and hopefully the train would be running faster. I mean, we rode around 5 p.m. earlier, so I don’t know if “warming up” was the issue.
Was it better? Yes. Steel Vengeance-like? Not even close. Sorry, this ride is super fun and I do love a lot of the elements, but better than Steel Vengeance? No way! I also have Wildcat’s Revenge at Hersheypark over it. I do want to get more rides on Iron Gwazi though to see if my opinion changes. Perhaps we just went on a meh day?
Cobra's Curse
Having missed out on the Mack coaster we really wanted in Stardust Racers the day before and having to settle for Curse of the Werewolf for that Mack fix, I was really looking forward to Cobra’s Curse. It always looked fun to me and its theming looked impressive.
Was the coaster up there with my current favorite Mack coasters in Copperhead Strike at Carowinds or Time Traveler at Silver Dollar City? No. I didn’t expect it to be, though. What I wanted was a fun ride that was unlike pretty much any other coaster I’ve been on. I got just that. I love the elevator lift and the three portions of this ride with riding forwards, backwards, and then spinning. We liked it so much that we ended up riding it three times.

Hoping for Better Next Time
I think next time I visit this park it’s not going to be in January (like in 2014) and I’m going to steer clear of haunt season. I want to visit this park when everything is open and I think my best chance to do that is when it’s warm and peak season. I don’t know though as I constantly see people complaining about ride availability and operations here. I don’t think our experiences were a one off. Lots of people seem to bash this park and want to see better. It has an amazing ride line up, so hopefully those problems can be fixed and this park can be on the level of its sister park in Williamsburg, Va.
